the best thing you can possibly do on any instrument full stop - is either try and work out songs (or more specifically parts of songs/licks) by ear, or try and work out stuff/songs you hear in your head... again by ear
You can choose as easy or difficult song as you like. Any educational material you want to watch is obviously great too, but don't let it distract you from doing your own thing & just working stuff out the hard way/musical way.
also, make sure the guitar is properly in tune before you play... every time
Hopefully this isn't an issue but your guitar might not be good enough to learn on. Any musician worth his salt will advise to always use the best instrument you can possibly get hold of, rather than going in cheap to get started. However, with guitars especially, if you know what you are looking for you can get a great guitar for $50-100 used to get started with.
