I bought Standard, Live 9. I don't use internal instruments like Operator, Max for Live, etc that come with suite. I rely on 3rd party VSTs like Sylenth, etc. That was my reasoning. Go for 9, don't mess with 8 either. Honestly, you would have to pirate 8 and Ableton sucks when it's pirated.

Because it's unstable and if it fucks up you can't contact them for help you have to attempt to find another copy. After spending years messing with cracked copies I gave in and haven't looked back since.

What I did was go and buy myself a Novation Launchkey Mini for $100 to get myself a midi keyboard and it actually came with a free version of Live 9 Lite. I was able to upgrade to Standard for $300 instead of $400 since I got the free version of Lite with my keyboard. It's pricey but worth it in the long run.

yes bought it 3 years ago, its the first generation machine, so only 2 different lights and 1.6 ...
but i think ableton gives me more possibilities and freedom, also i don't like recording my synth with machine, doesn't work so well and no workflow given,
so i thought ableton might be more suited if i wanna record extern instruments like my synth or what ever, e-piano, guitar directly into the program
