i'm mostly self taught but i'm sure anything under the search results "Beginner Guitar Tutorial" on youtube would work.

i.e. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=llNuwhZWXKA

just browse around for basic videos like this... i'm sure you'll at least get a good idea at how to start playing.

quite simple once you learn the basics, it's just that more advanced techniques can be tricky to learn/get the hang of

Learn the Barre chord first.
Once you've got that down you can play tons of Nirvana songs. :P

I could suggest this:

First learn some open chords, (beginner chords). As well as a few easy strumming patterns. Practice your chords and strumming for a while. Try them in different orders and see what you come up with that you like. A set of chords you repeat over and over is called a progression. You might come up with some dandy chord progressions just messing around. The strumming practice will be helpful too.

After that, check out my series on guitar. It starts out very easy and gets advanced pretty fast:

Thank you guys much appreciated. Ran into a slight problem tho. Opened my guitar case to find out I am missing a string.

Is that an easy fix or should I find a professional to take it to?

easy fix.
take your guitar into your local music shop and ask them to get the right string for you. ask if they can string it for you for free. if not, just follow a youtube video.

This site contains all the tabs for the songs you want to learn, for the most part. This plus Youtube is an encyclopedia of information

True, this and a couple other similar sites allow you to click a transpose button. That way you can sing it in a key best fit for your voice. Transposition is a great skill to know too, but a bit advanced for this conversation. I know how to transpose and I still find myself clicking a button to do it for me in many cases.
