I wanted to start a chat talking about guitar pedals. I've been into this thing for a bit now, and I'm looking for cool effects to add to my pedalboard.

Talk about guitar pedals that you recommend or that should be avoided.

I was thinking of getting an MXR EVH phase 90, thoughts?

I have this BOSS-bass-distortion-pedal. Sometimes i like to put it between my acoustic and the amp, and make funny sounds. It's pretty cool. :santa:

Phase 90 is the tightest cheapest phase. Go for it, dude. I've had one for years, the thing rocks.

Buying pedals for my pedalboard is one of the joys of playing guitar ^^ Nothing is more fun than bringing the new toy home and play with it for hours. My board currently has 7 pedals, not counting the tuner.

I'm looking for a phaser as well at the moment, and my choises atm are MXR Phase90, MXR Custom Shop Phase 90 with led and the BYOC Phase Royal. (BYOC is a great brand btw, check them out if you haven't!)

I haven't heard/read anything about the EVH phase90, but it can't go wrong if you're a fan of EVH I guess.

It gives you a button that changes from modern to old style phase too, look that stuff up on youtube it's great I"m looking forward to buying it. I'm also looking into misc pedals like the mxr mc-401 boost line driver for solo tone... not sure yet. Do you guys have any pedals you couldn't live without on your boards?

Looked a bit more into the EVH Phase, and it looks real neat indeed.

There are 3 pedals I couldn't live without on my board; the delay, tubescream/overdrive (think od808), and compressor. But boy am I attracted to my BYOC Large Beaver triangle big muff clone. That thing rocks my socks off and is like 10 times cheaper than the real deal. Boost it with a Boss BD2 and it's beyond epic! The Large Beaver is like David Gilmour in a box

I'm really new to this stuff so I've never heard of any of those. I looked up the beaver and it sounds like a good fuzz. The od808 is the rival to the ts-9 right? I was considering getting that one too

Ah I see. The large beaver isn't a fuzz though, it's a muff. From gilmourish.com;

"Big Muffs are often referred to as fuzz and although that describes the tone, a fuzz and Big Muff are technically two different pedals. While fuzz pedals are based on a very basic two-transistor circuit producing a almost crude and aggressive tone, the Big Muff has a more complex cuircuit and a much more balanced tone with rich harmonics and sustain. It is perhaps more accurate to place the Big Muff in a category between fuzz and the more modern distortion."

The BYOC large beaver is supposed to be a recreation (one of many today, but some say this is the best one) of the 70's era Big Muff that Electro Harmonix made. And a 70's big muff can go for as much as 1k dollars on *** IF you're lucky enough to find one for sale. So yeah, me paying $200 for the BYOC (shipping included) was well worth it (:
Idk what music you play/listen to, but if you've ever heard the solo in Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd, that's the big muff tone you hear right there.

And the Maxon OD808 isn't exactly a rival to the Ibanez TS-9, but to the Ibanez TS808. The TS808/OD808 and TS-9 are fairly similar though. I think the 808 is "warmer" than the TS9, but I'm not entirely sure. I'm sure there are a lot of comparisons on the net to be found.

I love the Muffs and inventive names - but i've never had one.

I got :

Dunlop WahWah pedal
Boss Metalcore Distortion
Channel Changer
Boss Chorus pedal

Thats it. Never been an effects junky, but my amp has built in Chorus / Reverb / Delay so don't really need more atm.
