Mapex Horizon Traveller

I have a PS3 on the kick
Ambassador coated / hazy on the snare
Empereor coat / Ambassador clear on the toms

I have a metronome.

I can do a decent roll but it's not a steady tempo, as I've NEVER had any drum lessons. I watch Youtube..

Any advice for learning a better roll?

I want to get up to Run To The Hills tempo in the end

This may seem like a dumb question, but I'm asking this seriously... are you holding your sticks correctly?

Yes, I play Overhand Grip, I haven't practiced Traditional yet.

It's a difficult question to answer without seeing and hearing it firsthand.

What kind of roll are you doing?
single-stroke
double stroke
pressed (buzz)
etc.

And for general information, Vic Firth has a section on their website for education. It's a pretty decent resource for learning the basics.
vicfirth.com - go to the eduction tab, then click on education resource center option. That'll take you to a good supply of videos and play-along files.

you could also go to pas.org, but it's a bit harder to navigate - especially if you haven't been on the website before. Also, I don't remember if you have to be a member or not.

I hope this helps and if you have any more questions, please ask.

P.S. (Are you trying to learn a roll between your hand and feet? I ask because you gave us the specs of your kit and I didn't know if it was just telling us the surface you're working with or whatever).

Just wanted to give you the general idea of what I'm working with.

Specifically for a roll like in Run To The Hills I single-stroke.

Never heard of pas.org I'll check it out thanks!

e/ Let me be more specific I made this poorly. My problem is the transition between the toms and keeping it continuous, not the actual speed of the roll.

I see. That sounds like more of a logistical issue which is 90% of percussion playing. Generally, I'd say to angle your toms so you don't have to break the angle your wrists are at and make sure your set up is pretty tight so you have the least amount of distance to travel between drums.

Maybe post a pic of your setup? That might help me help you more.

I hope this answers your question better.

It's all in my technique, I don't move fast enough.

Practice >

If you can't do something slow down till you can then work up to desired speed.
