I used FL for a long time but I eventually moved on to other software for certain reasons. I think FL is great in terms of workflow and I thoroughly enjoyed using it but I felt I got more power in certain areas out of other software. I also switched to a Mac so I had to switch DAWs anyway.
The equipment you could use to produce music is pretty endless. You can definitely make music right out of the box with FL, or really most any DAW. If you want more authentic sounds, find samples and patches you like, or learn to make your own which is much more rewarding in my opinion. You can also expand your musical palette with plug-ins, specifically VST plug-ins for FL.
I would recommend getting used to the stuff that comes with FL first, at least for a little while and then exploring other options and opportunities. Learning basic synthesis is a great place to start.
