I would never try something like this on my guitar.

I'd practice with some carved out peice of wood I don't care about first. Then after I had it mastered. I'd freaking glue that shiz to the strap and then tape it and whatever I had to keep on on me while I did it.

Even though I'd never do that kind of thing to my axes, I would tell ANY guitarist/bassist to go get some straplocks.
Seriously, those things are too good not to have and can save you a great deal of headaches. Personally I prefer the Schaller model on all of my axes.
