Id say just get a used multy effect pedal. Stomp boxes can cost alot and you only get 1 sound. If you want to get a neat multy effect pedal get like a digitech rp100a. Its got many effects and plays the drums!

so why do you need one in the first place?

there are so many effects. i can help you, but honestly this is so vague, I wouldn't know where to begin. Modulation? Dirt? Delay? What are you looking for?

Phaser, Fuzz, Univibe, Delay, Pitch Vibrato, Whammy, Wah, Envelope Filter, Ring Modulator, Overdrive, on and on

look at proguitarshop.com's pedals or at least the list of different effects, and we can start there I guess

uhh most common is probably overdrive and delay...fuzz and distortion are probably up there too...followed by i guess phasers, wah pedals, and chorus pedals. anyway, they all make relatively unique sounds, so you should probably watch some of the pgs clips and just get a taste for each one's sound

Here are some examples of types of multy effects pedals. Some can cost lots and some can cost little. Depends if used or not aswell.
