ok, so im like 2 1/4 months into playing guitar, and i still suck ofc but my question is about this particular song 1979 by the smashing pumpkins

on a scale of 1-10 how difficult is this song to play at tempo. and how long should it take for me to get this down pat? I intend to continue practicing etc, but im just curious how far behind the curve i am

It's pretty much the same chords at a rather slow pace throughout the whole song. So on a 1-10 scale, it's a...1.5?

Whenever you get to a new song, if you just began playing guitar, it'll seem like it's hard, but you'll look back on it like it was nothing. I suggest you just work on your scales, picking, speed and chords without trying to learn an actual song tho. Then once you feel comfortable enough, you'll mash through songs like that to a point where it's boring :P

If you're really into learning guitar tho, I strongly advise you learn your scales and practice your speed.

Scales will help with learning the songs.

scales will help immensely with your speed

all leads are based on scales and if your fingers know the shapes and movements of scales then playing quickly will be much easier to pick up than learning each solo note for note.

i'm wishing i'd put more time into learning scales / chords earlier on lol... now i'm facing the horrible task of going back 3 years and learning what i should have a long time ago

Standard Pentatonic scale is the absolute best imo

http://guitarsecrets.com/a_minor_pentatonic_scale.htm

http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/one-on-one/pentatonic-scale-1/

Both of these are exactly what you need - all you gotta do is learn them, and build speed slowly. It'll help with general chord changing aswell as speed and dex in your fingers.

Atleast a +10dex lol xD

im going to take ur word for it tho on the scales and things, since it seems like a good thing to learn, bob posted a link to one of those sites with 5 boxes, so im going to learn all of those tomorro and memorize. ive just been so focused on quick chord changes and getting chords to sound right, i havent put any time at all into picking, and i have alot of trouble playing random notes that arnt on the top or bottom string because i have alot of trouble finding the correct strings

Thats why the minor pentatonic is such a good scale to learn, it starts on the 6th string, goes through all of them to the 1st and then back again. Eventually your fingers will instinctivly know where the next string is.
