At the moment i am looking to buy a violin and teach myself or seek lessons.

I was wondering if this was a worthwhile violin.

http://www.long-mcquade.com/products/1941/Band/Orchestral_Strings_-_Instruments/Stentor/Student_II_Violin_Outfit_4_4_Size.htm

Once i learn how to play, i will be upgrading and potentially dropping 1500$ on a new violin + bow.

I was wondering if stentor student 4/4 violins were a good product. I have looked for reviews but every budget violin review i find all just sing praise.

Feel free to suggest a different violin.

this is what my brother got...based on the price it's obvious that they wont be top quality...but that is pretty damn cheap and what you get is not a piece of crap...and sounds decent

You ever looked at Yamaha Silent Violins? The SV-110 has had good reviews

Btw - this is an Electric Violin, runs through an Amplifier with built in effects and havn't really heard anything bad about them. Don't see why it wouldn't be a good starter one though

i'm not familiar with violins myself, but yamaha has notoriously good beginner instruments for every other string instrument that i am familiar with.

no no no and no. dont buy a yamaha or anything else from these shitty chinese companies. they are comprised of a soft parcticle board type material, most repair shops wont touch them (they break under any kind of stress/the repair exceeds the value). when you buy them online they need $100 setup off the bat.

go to a violin shop, not a guitar store. somewhere that does in house repairs because any violin under $300 is going to have issues within months if not weeks of playing. take it back and have them repair it, they will still charge you but hopefully give a discount.

There are no violin shops in my area. Just general music stores which is why i would buy it online. I'll check out craigslist though ^^

If there is a store by you that allows you to rent a violin I would suggest you start off with that. The quality of the violin won't be good at all but if you are just starting off. It will take a long time and a lot of practice before you need a $1500 instrument. However, if you do pick it up, enjoy playing it and are willing to put the time and effort into becoming a good player that is when you should upgrade to a medium one and then later an expensive one. There will be a lot of times where you hit a wall and get very frustrated...if you can make it through these and continually improve (I'm talking for at least 6 months to a year here) should you spend a considerable amount of money on your instrument.

TLDR - make sure it's something you really want to invest your time and money into before purchasing an expensive instrument, try renting one first and see how it goes
