it really depends what you mean by metal. Dark brooding sound is a thing perfected by vaughner (flight of the valkeryie) He invented more instruments to get more bass.

This is also very true, metal can go back to the days of Orchestra and Symphonies. I still maintain that Iommi invented the metal riff.

imo there were a few pioneers.

black sabbath (ev one knows that)
motorhead (huge influence)
led zeppelin (imo they had a lot of influence also)
