I already play piano guitar and the flute.. so why not?
i have a drum set in my basement so now i wanna make use of it :)

I can keep a basic beat with kick on 1 and 3 and snare on 2 and 4 and many cvariations of that. i dont know any fills or anything.
ANYONE KNOW HOW I CAN START LEARNING DRUMS SIMPLY BY PLAYING EASY SONGS?

i have a natural ear so I can pick things up easily but i just need someone to guide me :)

I think Judas Priest is the best stuff to get started on.

Hell, I still play along to this after 12 years of drumming, its just so damn fun

You recommend Judas Priest to someone who's just starting? Uhh.... dude..... No....

Gonna start right off by letting you know that a teacher is absolutely the best start if you want to learn drums. I know it may sound silly, but I assure you, you WILL learn 100x quicker with a teacher, hell even a friend who can play drums can teach you a lot.

The next most important thing to do when playing/practicing, USE A METRONOME. They are not expensive, you can find them used, you can download free ones on the internet, hell most phones have them for free on the marketplace... This is absolutely the most important part of drumming (keeping time) and learning early how fast a certain tempo is will save you tons of trouble down the line.

I'll go ahead and start by saying do yourself a favor and look some things up on youtube (How to Properly Hold Drumsticks (many drummers who have been playing for years STILL don't know how to hold Drum Sticks and their skill is limited because of it), Rudiments (ALL of them, I know at first learning them is overwhelming, but just start from the beginning, and then learn the rest. Most of the advanced Rudiments are simply different variations of earlier, easier ones) and Basic Beats/Lessons. FreeDrumLessons (user) has a lot of useful tips and tricks you can learn).

I'm not sure how serious you are about learning, but if you want to get significantly better, purchase a practice pad (actually you can do this on a pillow, it's even better for endurance as you experience no rebound) and play rudiments on it. Slowly but surely increase the BPM on your Metronome and you'll eventually be able to apply the same techniques and patterns you learned on your pillow/practice pad.

Once you've done those, you can/may want to try and learn a song. I absolutely recommend learning some AC/DC, you learn one song, you can learn them all. They have basic beats that sound good, with minimal fills but are still fun to play along to.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

First step would probably be to practice some basic rock beats. You probably know some alredy. Then starting with fills, you can easily do stuff based on sixteenth notes all around the kit. Be sure to use a metronome and practice your timing, it is crucial.

You will develop fills with time, I'd advise practicing different rudiments. You can find different drum lesson channels on YouTube, such as FreeDrumLessons, as arnott15 pointed out.

Then a hint would be to play relaxed and don't focus on speed all the time. If you're trying to build up speed eventually, do not try to make it faster if you're feeling tension in your play. Use the metronome, and start slowly. ;)

If you have any questions, I'll be really happy to help.

I don't know anyone who can't learn these basic drum beats in 10 minutes, that is if they don't already know what to do from listening.

I'm sure he can work out to check out the basics (eg how to hold sticks, sit at your drum kit and position your drums), after all he didnt ask anything about it...

I just answered this question

And will continue to answer whats asked, I would only delve into the pointless info your giving him when needs be =] He didn't let off any indication of being an idiot to me...

I never did basically anything you guys suggested btw :D Although I do teach people differently than how I learnt to play

Even with that said, all info here thats been posted is worthwhile and should be noted. But does not mean that is THE WAY to do things. There's nothing wrong with jamming along to those judas priest tracks right now, or you might hate judas priest so go choose something simple yourself. The radio will give you a song with a steady beat in it in no time at all if pop music is your thing.

Having a tutor in your chosen instrument is more about the psychology of learning rather than anything else. So it's not as important as alot of people think, but without the right frame of mind and self motivation you won't progress without a teacher.

I'm charmed lol, if I post it means I own the thread now? I obviously showed you some respect :P

Edit: I should probably mention I'm a drum tutor with 14 students.
