I prefer Vater 5B nylon tipped sticks.
Incredibly durable and versatile.

My recommended brand is Vater, of course.

Vic Firth will silk screen your dads name on their B-stock sticks. It'll be just like his own signature stick. Go with a hickory if you want durability.

check that out. they do custom engraving but you must buy in packs of 12 pairs.

It's not about the brand that is the best, it's about what the individual drummer prefers.

I would suggest going and having a look at your dads sticks while he is not around, find out what he actually plays with and then base your decision around that.

I mean... You wouldn't buy a girl a wedding ring without checking her ring size would ya?

EDIT: As an example, I play 5B nylon's that sport the name of my local drum shop. They are fantastically balanced, affordable and I have yet to break one. They tend to just shave down to nothing before they snap and I rim shot the hell out of my snare/floor toms.

I love them 10x fold over a brand name, but each to their own.
