I'm still learning a lot and up until this point I had used notes from a handful of scales (Major/minor/blues/ and other spin offs of these scales)

and just yesterday I was reading a bit about modes, and how the general idea was:

If you do a 2nd degree mode of C major, the notes would be:

D E F G A B C D

and likewise, if you did a D major 2nd degree mode it would be:

E F# G A B C# D E

and I noticed the fingering patterns for these 2 are the same

but out of curiosity, do minor/major scale modes all look the same?

IE: Major would be (intervals)

Root, major 2nd, minor 2nd, major 2nd, major 2nd, major 2nd, minor 2nd, major 2nd

IE WHWWWHW

does it look like that for every degree of the major scale? Even if your root is a sharp or flat?

Welll to answer this:

If you make a scale-map representing your fretboard (starting from the root-note), all majors and minors would look the same

EXCEPT

the root note defines where to start from. This also applys to modes.
Meaby you get what i mean, meaby you dont... I didn't explain this very well :D

I get what you mean

so the fingering pattern stays the same, all that changes is the root note.

Now I just need to figure out how and where to apply modes

Modes are very use-full if you wan't to change keys as they can emulate the steps between pitches with out generating a well defined key of its own. In my opinion they sound less out of place then many other means of modulation but that is very much a taste thing.

truly i think the best part about modes is the structured disitance it can have in relation to the key of your piece.

tl:dr they are great for jazz and blues riffs man.
