Been playing my crappy Squier 4 string jazz for 3-4 years now and want to step up to something new and interesting. Was thinking highly of getting a 5 string just got the added variety of sounds.

Been checking a lot of review sites and there seems to be mixed opinions....

Edit:

The type of music I play varies, as my band mostly does covers of punk/rock stuff. I myself prefer jazz and progressive, but eh. I'm still in the learning stages of bass.

My price range is 300-500 dollars

Was looking at this:

or this

http://www.guitarcenter.com/Schecter-Guitar-Research-Stiletto-Custom-5-Bass-103123600-i1147948.gc

(slightly higher than my range but eh, it's sexy and it seemed to have everything)

a friend reco'd it

then there was another site

http://www.5stringbassguitars.com/

(interesting name huh)

which lists their favorite 5

I have heard that you need a 35" scale to get the full sound of the B string, but I was hoping to find a bass with a smaller scale/fretboard since the squier is already effin huge/heavy. I wanted something lighter and easier to move around with my fingers

So can anyone tell me what to do? Should I continue my search for a 5 string? Do I get a 35" scale (is it 100% needed?) Or do I abandon hope and go for a 4 string instead.

Ultimately I need to test these myself but I need to know which ones to test...don't wanna troll @ Guitar center for like 5 hours you know.

do the EMG pickups make that big of a difference? Still haven't had time to go to GC yet

Also does anyone here have 5 strings? Is there any reason you WOULDN'T want to have a 5string?

I have no preference between 4 or 5 string, but 5 strings are nice, some people like the extra string, some people don't. But its not any harder to play than a 4. And as for EMG's, while I am not a huge fan of guitars with EMG's I REALLY like the bass pickups they make, it just sounds very deep and aggressive, with a decent amp you get a nice growl to it.

My bassist has ALWAYS had EMGs on all of his basses (peavey, tune, spector, warwick), and I have no complaints.
