Since you're a beginner, you can go to the local music store and ask for a set of basic strings. It will suit you needs.

Change strings when you feel they are dirty, or start making noises. Depends on how much you play per day, but meaby 6 months to the next change..?
I change strings once in a month, but i play 4-6 hours / day.

// Really, dont worry about the strings :)

Start out with some light gauge (I would suggest D'Addario brand) strings. As you build up strength I would suggest working your way up to heavier gauge strings, as they will give you better tone (at the cost of being a harder to play). I use D'Addario heavy gauge, but most guitar players would not use this heavy of strings, I wouldn't suggest going higher than medium gauge. You probably will be changing your strings every month or so, unless you play so much that the strings wear out faster (my strings are usually dead after 2 weeks, but I can't really afford to replace them this often) (:

If you plan to play ablot stand up, ask your local dealer to put you some "strap-lock", alot "easier and safer".
