The two knobs closest to the back of the guitar, control the back or bridge Pick up. The two closest to the pick guard control the front or neck Pick up. The top knobs are volumes, the bottom knobs are tone. The switch selects Neck pickup, (up) Bridge pickup (Down) and both Pickups, (middle.)

Five-way switch also exists, basically working the same way as 3-way selector, except the option between neck and middle, and the one between bridge and middle, toggle a diffrend kind of setup for pickups. I think 5 way selector requires at least three pickups, where 2 of them are humbuckers.

There are 5 way selectors and 7 way selectors and push pull knobs, but not on that guitar. And no, two of the pick ups do not have to be humbuckers for a 5 way selector. standard stratocaster models all have 5 way selectors

but what Superchum said is correct

you shouldn't worry about that stuff for now...it's more about being able to customize your sound in the future when you want to expand musically.

for now you just need to focus on dem scales and learning the fret board.

Agreed. For the time being, it's absolutely fine to have all 4 knobs cranked to 10. It's when you start understanding the sound you wanna make and the tone etc, thats when you start adding a middrange of lets say 8 volume/4 tone on the bridge.

Just learn your chords - the pentatonic scale - 1 full song (rhythm section only).

Once you've done this, you will have achieved the basic award and can concenrate on all your other bits like sound!
