okay so to play 'daughter' by pearl jam i gotta tune my low E to a G but i dont want the string to snap. two steps up sounds like a lot of tension. i use light daddarios but i get fearful that its just gonna give. the strings have been on for about two weeks now and i have stretched them. any tips?

Instead of doing that, why not do this:

Open G (major)
Tuning notes: D G D G B D.

Would that not be the same tuning but different octaves?

In honsty I have often wondered about tuning the guitar higher, but I don't really understand how it's possible (safely) and I love my standards and downtuning too much

the low e is a strong ass string, but are you sure it's not a capo song? i'm just guessing because i don't hear a lot about people uptuning like that.

and a very high tension string. dont worry about the string breaking as much as the damage you are doing to your guitar neck. i hope you are play electric, this would seriously fuck an acoustic guitar over time.

when it comes to tuning thicker strings higher, you'll break your tuning pegs/crack the wood there first.

vice versa when tuning thin strings.. the strings willl break if your nut isn't well maintained.

try getting lower gauge strings if you want to play that song.

or use a capo.
