It's been my favorite instrument to listen to for quite some time now. I've been toying around with it for a couple days now.
My question is in general how long does it take before the fingers get used to the strings, and don't get so sore as easily?

Months most likely, you have to build the proper callous.

Eh, when I first started playing the guitar some days my fingers would hurt, some days the won't. Even now, my callouses 'fall off' and my fingers still hurt sometimes after a show or something.
You'll get used to it.

The pain never stops. You just learn to accept it over time.

what? you playing clawhammer? (doubt it but if you are you rule) if you are playing 3-finger/scruggs style/bluegrass banjo you need banjo picks. your fingers shouldnt be hurting unless you are talking about your left hand -in which case you action is too high or something.
what banjo you get? im guessing a deering goodtime. i suggest listening to some john hartford and some freight hoppers. two of my favorite banjo players. ofc theres bela if you like jazzgrass.
