My debate is there is no such thing. My logic is as follows:

1) Playing drums is a style of self expression. That expression is found deep within each player's psyche, and is very different for every player. Therefore, it is a subjective matter. Everyone will see each person play differently, and each person watching each person will never fully understand the creative expression that the player is trying to output.

2) Since the very nature of drumming is subjective, there is no way to determine a "best". Each drummer will sound better or worse to each listener. Therefore, there is no objective reasoning that allows us to formulate a "best" drummer, because a "best" would have to be the #1, hands down top-of-the-stack drummer.

3) Now that reasons one and two have been established, I'll go on to say that even talking about this is what would be called from a Buddhist perspective, "silly" or, "ridiculous". There will never be a best because everyone sees things differently. It's pointless to squabble over it it and you might as well just like what you like because you like it, not because you were told s/he's the best.

May as well throw in some names though.

Rock/pop: Neal Peart.
Jazz/other: Vinnie Colaiuta

Though Peart wouldn't be my favourite, I'd say he's the greatest (best or not) rock drummer.

Bad troll is bad.

On topic, I totally agree with Ghost. There is no such thing as a best drummer.

Dude I will not lie. Early early Nick Mason was an amazing fucking drummer. He played melodies on the drums in songs like Echoes and A Saucerful of Secrets.
