Hey everyone!

Well, after getting inspiration from friends and Ben Chan (one of the top violinist) by watching his videos, I decided that I wanted to learn how to play the violin.

This will be my first instrument I will be learning to play. I'm 18, and my friend is selling me one of her violins this weekend.

Well, I have another friend that'll help teach me how to play, but I 'm wondering where's a good place to start learning?

Other than hiring an instructor that is.

Thanks in advanced JSP.

Theory.

Learn to read music, i dont think there is tab for violin, as there isnt for what i play, but i assure you reading music is much better anyway

Theres not much practical you can do until someone teaches the basics.

No worries, i mean you could try to teach yourself a bit before you have any lessons or something, but imo it would take ages if you havent got any previous musical knowledge.

get lessons. The violin is much more specific than the guitar.

Taking lessons is the absolute best way to improve. You should start by learning to read music. Then, you should practice scales.

Alright. I won't try it myself, but I'll try to get an instructor. Thanks again for guiding me.

That's awesome! My top two were piano or violin, and after seeing Ben Chan play, I decided on violin. They're easily portable too. (If I played a piano I'd want a grand one)

I'm most likely going to do this. Thanks.

for most people bowing is the hardest. before you take lessons id find some online lessons to play along with and focus on the bow. depending on where you live you shouldnt pay more than $20 per hour for beginner lessons. some people will want $30 or more (what their time is worth) you arent ready for that yet.

the other difficult thing to work on is intonation. guitarists take their frets for granted!
