Acoustic guitar with steel strings or nylon (spanish guitar) ?
Also, do you wanna play only or actually sing while playing ?

get tabs from ultimate-guitar dot com for songs you like. I started off w/ sublime and classic rock like floyd and even zep.

Great, it's somewhat the easiest, unless you can't multi-task at all and stay on the beat.

Here is a picture of some basics

It's read on this angle

Loads of songs are built with easy chords progression but you could encouter some hard strumming patterns (right hand move, ie. Down ~ down up ~ up down up).

Feel free to google : Strumming pattern (videos) & chord dictionary (pics)

Some easy stuff to start with :

The Cramberries - Zombie / Ode to my family / When you're gone
Evanescence - My immortal acoustic version (warning, Barred may be hard @ beginning)
Georges Harrisson - While my guitar gently weeps
Cat Stevens - Sad Lisa
Outcast - Hey ya
Bob Marley - No woman no cry
The beatles - Let it be
The animals - House of the rising sun
Nirvana - Polly

Just find out free tablatures/sheet music, most of the time chords to play are fully displayed.

Or, of course, if you're left-handed:
