He's using his thumb to fret the low E string at times,,

Well not everytime, I'm just saying his wrist position is wrong but yeh.. capo 3 ^^

e/ I'm not criticizing it's a recommendation, if you play like this for 10 years you'll be screwed up on certain chord progression/song/different guitar playing..
Not to mention the wrist ache.
Basically your palm shouldn't touch the fretboard ^^
