I'm assuming a Fender Ultra Chorus that he bought used off eebay.

Fenders aren't traditionally metal amps, so I'd look into different amps. Although, with the right pedals, I'm sure you could make the fender work.

im planning on getting something completely different. i think someone said like a mesa/boogie dual rectifier or something.

ive got a metal zone, but id rather have an amp with good distortion/metal tone

Mesa/boogie amps aren't cheap. I don't play metal, so I don't know if any amp has on-board gain strong enough, but a mesa/boogie will definitely play more heavily than a fender

This. They're nowhere near cheap actually. Be prepared to spend a few grand.

If it's going to be better for you, then why not?

I'd keep it as a practice amp and save up, unless you have a bunch of money already.

Oh wow I failed to read that LOL.

But yeah, fenders can be good if you have the right pedals and effects, or if you just go for an high-end. But in that case, it's even more advantageous to go with a mesa/boogie, but you'll spend a lot of $$$
