travis picking is also called a square roll. learn it first on 4 strings:
hold down a "C" chord and use only the middle 4 strings for this exercise (till you get it) so thats C =1 E =2 G =3 C=4
note: when playing any type of roll you typically assign a finger to each string, the thumb alternates between the other two strings. in this case thumb on low C and E, index on G and middle finger on high C
play in this order: 2 3 1 4 over and over again. that is a square roll.
2314 = 2thumb 3index 1thumb 4middle. simple!

Its just a particular pattern of finger picking, pretty easy to pick up.
