Being a "big guy" is no excuse. Only thing is just practice and believe or not, you could be lacking coordination and strength of individual as a new guitarist which most players do. Most newer guitars have pretty deep and wide frets so it should be easy after a good amount of time practicing... Now if this was in the past (I have a lot of vintage old guitars) it was tough to have large fingers..
But definitely being a big guy is no reason. Or explain how Andy McKee is great?

Love that guy.
Peter, I highly doubt your finger size is the problem. I mean, I can do a G Major shape chord on the 24th fret with ease.
When I started, I was blaming the size of my guitar neck for me not being able to do chords without dampening strings.
It just takes practice. That may not be the answer you're hoping for, but it's the right answer.
You may be doing it right, but it isn't going to work out until you're more comfortable doing it.
I suggest just getting a list of a bunch of chords, practice them, then practice making the transitions between them.
That's what I did, and it paid off after a while.
