It's the meter signature, or time signature.. hmm it's a little complex to understand if you haven't been introduced to them, but ill try to explain briefly

4/4 it's a very common time, and its basically 4 quarter notes per bar, one, two, three, for. ^v><.. idk im not a good teacher lol here ill let him explain >.<
