Increasing the speed of your playiing while maintaining accuracy requires a lot of practice. If you never took formal lessons and are having trouble, you should talk to a trained instructor (someone who has been educated in how to teach music, not just music school) and have them analyze your playing to see if you have any technical problems.

To improve playing for fast solos, work on simple alternate picking and legato exercises with a metronome and gradually increase the speed.

Guitar Hero is actually really good for building finger strength as I've found out, but that's about it. Then again, you could just play a real guitar and build finger strength doing that too.
