you put one finger on the 2 and you use the rest of your fingers to mute the other strings and you play an open d

rest your fingers on top of the strings so they won't vibrate. Don't press down hard enough to actually fret the note though.

Actually in tab a mute would appear like this:
----2----
----X----
----X----
----0----
----X----
----X---

So whats its really telling you is to use a finger (Any convenient one) to hit the F#/Gb (2nd fret of high e string) and pluck the open d string at the same time.
Simple as that.

This. The tabs are not telling you to mute anything, its simple telling you to play the 2 on the highest string and 0 on the other.

with your left hand, fret the top string at the 2nd fret. now, rest your right hand so that your thumb is resting on the D string and your middle finger (or a finger of your choice) is resting on the high e string (your thumb will be above the D string and your other finger below the e string). Now move the finger and thumb inwards and pull out so you pluck both strings at the same time... I don't know why I felt like explaining it so detailed like this.. i prolly just confused u even more, sorry... but I'm hoping at least that it helped...
