Just turn the head till the strings are nice and tight. Gives it a great clean sound.

You can pick up an electric tuner dirt cheap at guitar center. Be warned that they are not very accurate though.

i never had a problem with my $20 tuner... how innaccurate do you suppose they are?

Nothing beats the BOSS Chromatic Tuner. Their pretty expensive though, but I agree the $20 ones aren't bad at all.
