I am trying really hard to learn but I suck ass. if I really try, I can go like 5 words before tearing up and coughing like mad. and I don't sound that good, either....

Any of you guys do growl vocals and have any tips for me? Note I am talking about traditional growl vocals, I.E in Death Metal, and some black metal. I'm not talking about Hardcore/screamo type vocals.

If you are coughing it probably means you are trying to make sound with the wrong part of your throat. One will usually try to push from the top of the throat because it is easier at first. This will damage your throat and hurt like crap. In order to get a good growl you need to push hard from your stomach (after a good while you will start feeling the tightening of your abs this is good). The growl will come from the bottom of your throat, the way i learned was by by doing a long sigh and you want to push out hard but long and even. At first you want to let the air out easily like a normal sigh. As you start to get it dont let the air out so easily, that is try to tighten the bottom of your throat. This is a similar tightening like when one grunts normaly except you will want to have your mouth open so you can make the words.

Sounds pretty cool.

what I'm going for (to start, atleast) is a regular, somewhat high-pitched growl.... like Death, Morbid Angel, Dissection, etc.

what i've found is that the higher pitches are whats hard to do, as well as extremely low pitches. Its easiest to start lower than what you're normal voice is because you can feel it more and are less likely to strain your throat.

Gotta growl from the diaphram. Just like singing. Water or gargling vinegar also helps your vocal chords.

good video with some tips:

Use less air, try pushing from your stomach.. Its kind of weird to explain.

yes I've beeen watching lots of Corpsegrinder videos/interviews, he is an awesome vocalist and gives some really good tips.

right now I think I'm sticking with black metal style, a friend of mine helped me learn it, and I can do it the most consistently and it doesn't even slightly hurt my throat. I sound pretty gay though, still got a lot of work to do on it.
