I need the best possible drum set for under $500.

for starter drum-sets, or any drumset actually - but particuarly budget kits - go for mapex.

you can get pure birch shells with a maple exterior for around £500 - which is above your budget, but probably the best value and quality in the industry for acoustic sets...

as for $500 (£300 ish) you would probably a rubbish basswood kit for that price - but in that case, go second hand on e bay or in local advertisements papers, shop windows, local practice rooms/studios adverts.

all good known makes can make drums very well, thats why they're so big. all drums can be tuned and hit - thats what they're there for. no make is really better than another when your talking about the big names. just make sure you just get good quality wood at a low price, and thats mapex all the way.

also, i prefer the sound of mapex over any other drums

I agree with the mapex, for starter it's a good quality / price drum.

End of this topic your buying a mapex kit. also if you got enough buy spare heads for your kit + any other extras you need i think the mapex starter is arround £469
