I am also in the process of creating my recording setup. This is what im going for based on my research/recommendations.

Interface: Mackie Satelite, this baby has plenty of ins and outs. Also has the satelite option where you remove the inputs from the base and you can take it anywhere to record your band and then take it home plug it into the base again and you can mix and such on your computer.

Mics: Shure SM58 for Vocals and SM57 for amps. This is basically industry standard without the billion dollar pricetag. Most people will tell you not to mix with headphones because most come with some kind of frequency inbalance. However if you find a pair of headphoens with a fairly flat EQ it should be ok.

Well how would you want to record vocals without the music?

like aok said, use a shure sm58... try to get as much direct sound as possible (little early reflections / reverb as possible, unless your gunning for that.)

Thats what I use and it suits me for every situation Ive needed it for thus far. Plus its cheap compared to many others with similar performance.
