So my birthday is coming up, and a few people have consorted to buying me a guitar (electric) to learn on. This is my first guitar and I've been looking at a few but am really lost at what to get for the price. I was looking for something around $300, that can make a nice Frusciante like sound and will be good to learn on. Thanks!

EDIT: Looking for something with a wood finish, preferably a notable brand such as fender or strat ect. (Not necessary, but helpful)

PS: If anybody is of help I'll donate some fg for the trouble.

if it's your first guitar don't get electric, start on acoustic, it's a lot easier to learn and better anyways

my first was an epiphone, not bad at all

If you want to sound like frusciante, get a fender stratocaster. You could probably get a mexican strat for an affordable price, and once you've been playing for a while and you feel like upgrading, go ahead and get an american standard.

If you're dead set on his tone, no other brand will sound quite the same. Please note that the amp you choose is very important to your sound, but for a beginner you should be fine with any old practice amp.

I can't seem to find anything on fender.com, would I be able to find a mexican one under a different name?

They don't sell guitars on the site...you need to find a dealer. Most fender strats are probably going to be Mexican, you can clearly see if it's Mexican or American by looking at the price. The American ones are like 2.5x more expensive, if Mexican is around $400, the American is around $1000.

ive got a good cheap pawn shop acoustic guitar (yamaha) as beater, cost $80 and plays well. i wouldnt but a squire (mexican fender) whether elec or acoustic. blueridge guitars are hands down the best you can buy for around $600ish i play a br-160 and it sounds almost as good as my neighbors $1200 martin. i wouldnt spend "more than $150 but less than $600" on a guitar. you will end up with a $400 piece of crap, unless you get lucky. get a cheap one that plays good then upgrade if necessary.

Thanks for the advice guys, I think I'm going to get the Yamaha Pacifica 112J, http://www.yamaha.ca/content/guitar/products/electricguitars/PAC112J/specifications.jsp

I was thinking about replacing the pick ups with sometime a little more high quality though, any suggestions on what pick up to use and a price range? Thanks!

BTW if you oppose this decision do tell tongue.gif

Don't worry I still play on a similar crappy guitar and shitty ass amp and I've been playing for like 3 years(not so much lately though). I just never thought it's worth spending much money on it. I'll probably get some $500-600 amp soon though to replace that awful garbage I have. Maybe Jackson guitar after.

I wouldnt waste your money on that :-/

If you want a strat in your price range get the squire vintage modified ..this guitar really suprised me when i played it
http://www.guitarcenter.com/Squier-by-Fender-Vintage-Modified-Stratocaster-SSS-Electric-Guitar-512572-i1172563.gc

But my personal advice is epiphone sg..great for beginer or anyone for that matter I have friends with gibsons jacksons esp etc and almost all them own an epi sg and play it more often then the others haha

choice is yours tho
