My brother says that any guitar that can be plugged in to an amp is an electric guitar.

I'm trying to tell him that acoustic guitars can be plugged in to an amp...but he is saying that they aren't acoustic and they're electric.

I know I'm right, a "No" vote would back me up.

You're both wrong. Electric acoustic guitars look like acoustics, but they are fitted with a pickup, mic, etc... and an output jack. These function the same as an acoustic, but they will also plug into an amp.

These guitars are neither acoustic or electric, but rather both. My answer to your question isn't yes or no. It's both.

An acoustic guitar with a pickup is not an electric guitar. Those that have it built in it is just like having a microphone infront of the sound hole. If you are referring to a semi-hollow, which looks like an acoustic guitar but has all the electronics then that is an electric guitar because it doesnt actually receive the sound from the hollow body, it just adds a different characteristic.

It's both lol

Electrics are clearly Electric. Acoustics are clearly acoustic. But Acoustics can also have the components that allow it to be used through an amp. It doesn't change it from an Acoustic, it just amps the sound of it.
