learn scales and their corresponding chords. Basically what a solo consist of is, the scales that follow the chord progression you are playing over. So if you are playing a simple C chord you can play a C scale, in any form and it will sound good. So learn your scales, and then learn modes. You can find all of this stuff on cyberfret.com

I wouldn't say 99%, but you're right - it is very common.

I would recommend learning more than just one scale, though. Knowing only the pentatonic scale will make your soloing very generic and one-dimensional.

Practice your scales to build chops, listen to a variety of music for inspiration, and before you know it you will start hearing songs in your head that you spontaneously made up. Pick up your guitar, and figure out how to play what you're hearing in your head, and voila! You're a hero.

learn your major scale and how to build chords
If you learn the hows and whys of the major scale, it will be much easier to learn the major/minor pentatonic, natural minor scale, harmonic minor scale, melodic minor scale, and the rest of the modes.

for begginer help and great articles, i suggest www.ibreathemusic.com.
Also, suggest cyberfret.com
