I've been playing guitar for about a year now...
I taught myself how to play and such and now my Dad thinks that I need a teacher to teach me the fundamentals and stuff or else it's just talent going to waste.
I don't have a foundation yet so I am really excited for my guitar lesson tomorrow at 7:00.
I will keep this updated on how it goes.

Ehh...

Guitar lessons imo are not necessary, or usefull. Sure, if you all you wanna do is play songs other people wrote, its not so bad. But getting lessons from someone else really mutilates your own creative way of doing things, and learning on your own is the best way to achieve your own style.

I can partly agree with this. However, my personal experience from guitar lessons (6 years sleep.gif) is that some parts of your development as an guitarist can be significantly faster if tutored by a good teacher. At least for me I'd say the payoff in the long run for the time invested in lessons was quite good. If OP wants to play classical guitar I would really recommend lessons at least for some time, as technique and understanding initialy will be more rewarding than creativity. wink.gif

I've been playing for half a year now, and was also thinking of talking some lessons. But i won't take too many, i just need some tips which i can't really get from my friends or people i know ( not many guitar players here :/ ). I think if you go to a teacher with specific goals you want to achieve with his help, it can be very useful, and not really destroy "your own note" in your playing wink.gif

Those of you who are saying it is useless... I can sorta agree with you with the fact that you do not have your own style.
I am only taking guitar lessons for good technique so that I don't play retardedly like my friend who just moves his fingers around when he can hold a certain chord and play all the notes.
I am taking lessons for a good foundation.
I do not plan on playing exactly like my teacher (although he is very good)
I want to play to learn new things like a palm mute which I have trouble with or alternate picking etc..
