It ' supresses ' unwanted noise wink.gif

basically it cuts off the sound when the signal becomes too weak.. depending on how its set.

If I recall, it works sort of like low volume compression, truncating the signal at whatever decibel level you set it to. When I played through a Boss GT-3, I used to run both Noise Suppression and Compression, set really high with Pantera-esque distortion. It sounded really tight, and super fuckin' crisp, especially the highs. I use a Dimebucker in the bridge, so the NS really helped, and the compression kept the high end from getting out of hand. Overall I'd say they're essential if you play heavier music, especially if you're going to be gigging and need it to sound clean.

You know all that humming, feedback and static you hear when you stop playing?

It's prolly because you have any combination of a cheap guitar, cables, amp, cabinet, pedals and anything else between the strings of your guitar and the speakers the sound is supposed to come out of.

Even if you don't have the worst equipment on Earth, you'll prolly still hear some noise when you're not playing (more prevelent at higher volumes).

A Noise gate/suppressor can eliminate it, and if you get a good one it'll do it without klling any of the sound you want while playing.

I and apparently a lot of other people reccomond the 80 bucks or so on a Boss NS-2.
It's simple, very adjustable for what needs to be done and a CLEAN inline stompbox.

it controls the annoying buzzes and feedback you here, it barely helps if you're using your amps distortion, but if you're using pedal distortion it makes all the difference
