It's kind of ridiculous to try to judge who's the best guitarist alive.  First off, I'd bet money it's some nobody that no one has heard of. =) As we know, skill doesn't necessarily equate to a successful career.  Second off, how can you really judge what's "best".  We all have different styles, and you can't compare apples and oranges.  All this question will really return is a vote for who your "favorite" guitarist is...

im gonna agree the best guitarist is probably a fucking session musician

well everybodys going with the shreders with no originality, who's moments of glory are all of them solos they're so proud of on a shitty riff.
if you wanna talk shreder, Mustaine is your man no doubt, just his average guitar riffs are as powerful as decent Guitar Solos from other bands.
if it wasn't for him Thrash wouldn't be what it is today.

heres a video of Holy wars Live in 2007 a few years after his arm recovery from a nerve injury, still Shreds like a 11 year old that masterbates... Can't say he's at his top shape, but he does what he wrote better than anyone else.

only reason why i think Jimmy Page is the best is because he is of the few Pioneers that influence the world of Heavy Metal that i truely admire... ofc there are other guitarist such Iommy or Rhoads that diserves an ovation but i never really got into sabath and Rhoads is dead :( i got to stay thread related (even though i think he deserves a damn standing ovation... ima get up of my chair right after i post this reply for his name sake).

I honnestly think, even though i am not a huge fan (i'm flat on cash and downloadins not my thing :S), That Petrucci will go down in metal history as one of the most influencial mind in the past decades.

this is my opinion.

Hendrix and Santana are bad techically, and from a musical point of view, they make just noise IMO. So shut up, and learn stuff about music before boldly stating these guys are the best.

You have been severely beaten by the stupid stick. You are such a deluded idiot, you no longer have permission to post here.

This whole topic has given me a headache.
