Practicing speed and alt. picking is obviously acheived by playing scales.

Try a simple scale and try to find an alternate version of it, and create a pattern. Say 3 times with the first version and the fourth time with the second version. Always alt. pick. Start slow, build up speed.

It's fun once you start making it sound good, and you can solo on top of a scale easily
