going with the roland cube 30x

or the peavey vyper 30w.

opinions on these?/which is better?

Try them out in a store if you can, neither is very hard to find, and they are both reasonably good amps for what they are.

Vox amps are not made to put out a high gain metal/deathcore tone.

the Vox ad (valvetronix) series actually have like 3 really high gain amp models on them and they sound really quite good for that matter. I have a vox ad100vt head as my back up to my sovtek, and it sounds really good with high gain through my PRS.

I have not tried that model, in general I have associated a warmer/softer tone with Vox amps, not a high gain. What pickups do you use? Do you tune down? How is the low end sound, is it crunchy or guttural?

That's the best way to do it as long as you know how to search for the tone you want.

Your thinking usually of the vox Ac15, and Ac30 tube amps, as well as there vintage style hybrid amps. The AD 100vt is basically like a more modern modeling amp, its hybrid as well so includes the pre amp tube to help the cleans. It also has basically what amounts to a built in attenuator so that you can select the wattage on the amp, and drive the amp higher, therefore achieving better tone at lower more reasonable volumes. I picked the head up for 299. about a year ago to backup my Sovtek Mig 50 hg head, and it suprises me whenever I decide to plug it in, I am a tube amp guy all the way... but if your on a budget, the advt series vox's are just amazing for the price, I think the 100 watt head is only 249 at musicians friend atm... I would recommend going out and trying it out.

I was about to say, I've heard some mean sounding Vox amps.

Best solid state, small, cheap amps. Definitely the way to go. Easily under $200.
