I'mma be franc.

I can't read music, know harshly some several scales, but still, am more talented than many, many guitarists.

Why? Because I can't be arsed to learn everything since I know music isn't my actual passion. I know I won't spend my life to music. I play for fun, still, take it half-seriously.
Recently recovered an old keyboard and starting jamming with it. Learned about a song. I know how to play drums too. I write songs, I cover songs, I enjoy playing music aswell as creating it.

Anyways, that is all.

Unfortunately, I get the same impression.
I play Jazz piano.
But I jam experimental fusion usually.

I have more respect for someone that picked up an instrument for themselves, self taught, studied music theory on their own without someone pushing you through all of it or paying for lessons.

I write my own music, and have taught myself almost everything I know.

I'm glad to be a self taught musician, and would be glad to show any of you up musically or in theory or scales or modes any day.

No use in reading music when you can play it from memory or by ear.

actually there is. its better to learn to read music as it flows, rather than having to learn it all the time. i played in a jazz band once. saw the music, played it np. the guitarist / drummer had to sit and fiddle each note out. because they learnt to learn and not read music.

and knowing what each note sounds like on a clef also makes it easier to play by ear.
