As a guitar teacher, you should be challenging them.

btw, Special Olymics doesn't count for 1's in guitar comps

LOL Best thing I've heard this far in this thread.

And yeah, was thinking about writing that down but guess you did it for me. Being a teacher it is always about challenging your students and taking them 'one' step further. onepagememory, you said, if I recall correctly, that you went to university in music... or something along those lines. You should know then what your role really is.

Also, please don't come saying that it's easier to teach 'Greenday' than teaching something new/other. If your students really are that good, then you must be good as well, and teaching something better to a 'scrub' as you call them shouldn't be much more of a hassle. It should be as easy as tying your shoe lace.

P.S.: I have stated 'Greenday' because ever since our conversation with Mr onepagememory has started, this band was denoted as our lowest level of music to learn how to play on guitar. It could've been any other beginner piece of music.

I'm not fantastic at guitar, but I'm decent. I don't play because I want to fit in. I play because I love the guitar and it was something I always wanted to do since I was little.

Being known as one of those guys who knows a couple chords and thinks he can play guitar is what discourages me from wanting to learn to play. I have about eight guitars in my house; I even help make electric guitars with my dad, but I don't want to be seen as somebody who can strum... and that's it. I've been wanting to learn lately simply so I could be able to perform with guitar and vocals, which would be amazing for me.

I agree, though. I have a couple friends. Some of them go around with guitars in school playing, and they aren't any good. Then there's others who play on their own time, just for fun, and could smash the hell out of anybody in the school of they wanted to. The gap between show-off's and dedicated players is amazing.

Wow, this about sums it up perfectly. there are people that go to my school that bring their guitars everyday so they can strum chords and try mediocre riffs, mostly without even alternate picking, its sort of sad, i've even talked to a few of them and one guy couldnt even make an F chord because "his hands were too small"

lol it's a bitch haha. People who say their hands are too small, or people who say they have the wrong fingers for guitar are liars. Thats the great thing about guitar. You only need 2 hands to play it. But to play it well takes time and dedication.

Eldest, Don't worry about performing with vocals at the same time man. I can't do it either, so i focus myself on the techinque of my guitar playing. I'll eventually be able to sing and do it, but not until i'm fluent at fretboard level smile.gif

What's funny is he even used the wrong excuse... it should of been more like "I cant bar my first finger" because an F is on the higher strings ..

Look, if you're looking to your guitar for reps then you're doing it wrong. Play music because you love to play it, its cliche but people don't ever really understand that. People get the impression that to be a 'good' guitar player means learning how to play fast or fancy, but its the quality that counts -- anyways, it seems you understand that so then just play. Half of my friends don't even know that I play guitar/keyboard/sing because I don't look for rep points through anything but my own character. Ignore them if they irk you.
