It's a cajon.

They are pretty popular in smaller gigs all over the place.
It has a snare on the inside.

I ordered all the hardware and I have the raw shells already glued up. It'll take a while because I used a friends lathe to turn the shells, so it'll take a while for me to make a router jig to turn the shells.
