Yea... I like dudes with their own style. Not so much the fastest, or busiest but guys that changed the style of guitar. I find a lot of the prog stuff to be more calculated and counted rather than visualized. The term math is often used for good reason. Not to say that their isn't an art to it, it just seems that it's formulated. I like the idea of music being a form of expression.

Les Paul is maybe missing from my list but who to take out?

Mkay, I lasted 3 songs into The Evening with Petrucci & Rudess - total shite. Can't believe I not only wasted my time, but also my iPod space.

I hate progressive music, thats a first. Secondly, classical bores me. Thirdly, I do not care for Petrucci or Rudess at all. They both un-interest me greatly.

Flame all you want - I gave it a try and did not like it.

Well, at least you tried. It's really hard to like an album like that since it's classical mixed with progressive, but I love that. Classical only bores me, but I find that genre to be somewhat interesting!

Did you give a shot to his solo album or not? Way different than the Evening.

I'd suggest listening to Tunnel Vision, Glasgow Kiss and Wishful Thinking.. They are the best 3 imo.

Some of my favorites are John Fahey, Sir Richard Bishop and Jack Rose.
Also Django Reinhardt & Tom Verlaine.

I don't have a top 10. 5 will do.

5. Mark Tremonti - Guitarist of Creed, one of my favorites. Not much to say other than this man can fuckin riff.

4. Paul Gilbert - One of the more comprehensive shredders I've seen.

The next 3 are at a tie, and are in no specific order.

Tommy Cook - My guitar teacher, best guitarist I've ever seen in real life, most modest and humble person I've ever met. The guy is almost aggressively nice.

Chuck Schuldiner, father of all things death metal, best riffer I've ever heard, a hell of a fuckin' guitarist.

Last but not least, Guthrie Govan, AKA guitar Jesus.

Are we talking pure talent wise? Or are we including emotional playing in this?

Artists like Buckethead/Joe Satriani/Steve Vai seem to have no soul in their guitar playing. That's just my personal belief...

What I mean by that is someone like Eric Clapton can play a simple chord structure in a song and you feel it emotionally.

While people like Buckethead, yes they play fast and their technically sound and unbelievably talented, it has no emotion.

Music is about emotion, not just raw talent.

And I haven't seen Prince on any of these

T5 personally

Eric Clapton
Prince
Jimmy Page
Slash
SRV

After that there are too many guitarists for me to narrow it down into another 5 =\

Really? That's a very interesting pair and I agree in the sense that they layer melodies so damn well, and so often! Trigger ftw

Tommy was upset with the lack of his presence in this thread, as I earlier expressed. He made me post this, for great justice.
