It's kind of ridiculous to try to judge who's the best guitarist alive.  First off, I'd bet money it's some nobody that no one has heard of. =) As we know, skill doesn't necessarily equate to a successful career.  Second off, how can you really judge what's "best".  We all have different styles, and you can't compare apples and oranges.  All this question will really return is a vote for who your "favorite" guitarist is...

my vote goes 2 Pete Townshend... he's my favorite.  I'm not saying he's the best or anything, but I like him best =)

i totally agree, take this guy for example

This is the correct answer. No matter how you look at it, Malmsteen will ALWAYS outshred anyone against him, and he'll make it look easier than Petrucci

Yeah, but what about the people who think shredding is just boring?

That's based on the assumption that shredding is inherently more difficult that other styles of playing. I think classical fingerstyle requires a lot more still, technically and musically. Just because it's really fast doesn't mean it's harder than something that's slower. There is a lot more emphasis put on tone in fingerstyle, particularly dynamics.

So ignorant of you. You should look into more stuff, there's guys lots better than him both in the shred and other genres as well.
