damn.. everyone is saying different things ..

this is so confusing :(

hmm.. maybe i could even buy a new guitar for like $300, and get a used amp for like a hundred bucks?

does new/used make a difference for amps?

I'd say it makes more of a difference for amps than guitars.
Coincidentially, I bought my most recent guitar new, and my most recent amp used.

A used guitar would have little chance of things going wrong. A used amp could be the same, or sometimes a nightmare. It's sometimes luck of the draw :)

I suggest an Epiphone Les Paul Standard.
I started with that and I dont regret it at all. It's way more versatile than a strat so you have many more options on which way you might want to go.

Edit:

They are not even close lol.
I had an epiphone les paul standard, epiphone les paul custom, a gibson les paul studio, a gibson les paul standard, and a gibson les paul custom.

The more money you spend the better when it comes to epiphone and gibson.
They're all great guitars though. Just buy what suits you best.
I wouldn't suggest getting the epiphone special, I wouldn't go cheaper than the standard.

Edit: Cheaper ibanez's are very unreliable and don't hold their value well. I'm personally not a fan, but they're more expensive stuff is pretty good.

ya like i said i wasnt sure if it was true or not
i just heard it from my brother's friend
i personally thought it wasnt true

okay guys.. went to a local guitar store today, but they didnt really have many guitars under $300 :(

the guy did however show me this starter pack with a fender squier.. but i was REALLY skeptical about it becauase apparently squier is no good?

here's the starter pack: http://www.zzounds.com/item--SQU301605

it was $400+ tax

any opinions?

im going to check out another guitar store tomorrow and see if they have a better selection

also.. my friend recommended a Yamaha Pacifica or something like that, any comments on that?

I really want to make the right choice

Squire is absolute garbage. Never buy anything squire, save your money.
I'd personally woudln't bother with starter packs, but they are cheaper. But they will not last you very long as you will quickly grow out of them.
I dont know anything about that specific model of guitar, but i'd try to stay away from a "Yamaha" guitar, imo.

msg me if you have any more questions.

Check out craigslist or pawn shops bro. Most small local guitar shops are a rip off for anything unless your buying like strings. Go used in my opinion if you want a quality instrument for your money. For 350 bucks you could get a basic used solid state halfstack like a crate etc.... You can find 4x12 cabs for 100 bucks all day long on craigslist, and an ESP LTD base model, like an Ec-50 etc, Believe me I have bought full setups for less. Look around IMO. If your smart and wait a little bit you can get something that lasts. I normally will buy broken or beat up stuff, fix it up, then resell it within the week, but thats me, I have been taken amps and guitars apart since before I had a clue how to put them back together, lol.

Agile guitars are by far the best low end/beginner guitars on the market.
