i guess u have to know the theory and scales rly well
scales are just certain sections of a key..
for example e aeolian = e minor.
lots of classical piano pieces use harmonic minor though, which sharps the 7th.
i know the theory it's just hard to relate to what they are doing since music was taught and learned differently back then.

what I do is just sit in my room and jam on my guitar and record as I play.. its like thinking out loud and its very helpful to revise a lick this way into something better and bigger imo.
i've tried thinking out loud but it's difficult.
i might resort to finding a classically trained piano teacher just to understand more about it.
