I agree with this, guitar is a hard thing to grasp at first and you'll likely quit a few time's.
Buy a starter kit and if your still devoted enough then go full out with the equipment.
he'll pay almost as much as he would pay buying a decent beginner setup which would hold some of its resale value if he decides its not for him
