Guitarists never make mistakes.

If you are a guitarist, and you make mistakes, you will never be a pro.

Quit while you're at it.

yes they do. most likely.

Not sure what you mean by that. Any scale you're playing on would just be a variation on some other scale. Scales are like matter - you can't just create it/them out of nowhere.

i lol'd. what im saying is if i intended on playing G major and say hit a Bb i would substitute the Bb for the B for a few measures, then balance the whole thing with a big fat B near the turnaround/bridge/end what have you (no im not talking about playing in Gm). -hard for me to explain to a guitarist. tongue.gif

If you're playing GM, and you hit a Bb, you didn't create a scale just there. You Are still either playing in GM, with an accidental flat, or you're playing in Gm for that measure. Why so elitist, talking down to guitarists? Are mandolinists supposed to be better at improvisation?

Anyway, I'm not a huge music theory fan. I know a little bit of theory, and I know some scales, but I don't use them as rules when I play - they're only guidelines. I'm not here to debate with you about music theory, I'm just saying that you can't make scales. Also, my analogy was a spur of the moment one, based on the belief that you can't create or destroy matter. Yes, that's been debatable lately, what with particle accelerators and all that jazz, but who really gives a fuck? it was just an analogy, and was certainly not grounds for a rude PM.

Hard for me to explain to a DBZ fan...

rude pm? sry was trying to provoke discussion -was actually kind of joking mate. and all i am saying is that the way the guitar works (3 notes per string in a hepatonic scale) you have to memorize patterns more than on say a violin where there are 4 notes per string (make sense?). you could say violin is more geared to play solos (definately easier on violin) but i couldnt for the life of me sit and write out as many scales as i could play on either. what i mean is i am playing in an unintended scale, on occasion -say a mode i have never used/practiced in order to cover up for a mistake. you are correct that any natural sounding scale i would recreate, even if new to me, has been discovered and exists in a book somewhere.

think we got off track friend.

now pls what the hell is DBZ? not that pikachu crap paul is all about is it?

your avatar resembles a character from DBZ (Dragon Ball Z - anime). I'm sure it's the same art style, anyway.

And yes, your point is perfectly valid. I think most people will agree that once you've learned some music theory, sometimes it's just best to ignore it altogether, or it can become very suppressing.

use massive guitar effects (like delay) so that everything sounds good even if you make mistakes

Most listeners won't realise the minor mistakes unless they know the song really well.

However the most important thing is to carry on. Live music wouldn't be live if it was a perfect performance every time.
